New Boiler Room/Utility House, Menard Correctional Center

Chester, Illinois

Project Summary

The project involves the construction of a new Boiler Room/Utility House located outside the secure perimeter of the Menard Maximum Security Corrections Center. Central to the scope is the development of a new Utility Plant that will house high- and low-pressure steam boilers to support heating and process loads across the entire campus, along with domestic water heating boilers. All equipment will be natural gas-fired with a backup fuel source to ensure reliability.

The facility will also include essential support spaces such as offices, restrooms with showers and lockers, a dedicated room for in-custody vocational training, a shop, and a tool storage area. To address potential power outages, redundant diesel engine generators will be installed in a secure fenced area adjacent to the Utility Plant.

Site improvements will feature retaining walls, new driveways, and overhead power relocation. Additionally, space will be reserved for a future Chiller Plant next to the Utility Plant. The driveways will be engineered to accommodate full-size 18-wheel trucks, ensuring efficient access and maneuverability around the facility.
